Doctors often tell people to lose weight, eat healthier and stop smoking. Now, let’s talk about how you can actually do these things.

Hi. I’m Dr. Cindy Haines host of HealthDay TV.

Living a healthier lifestyle can be hard, but change isn’t so tough if you go about it the right way. Try these three steps:

1, Learn why you want to change. We all want to be healthy, but that’s kind of vague hope that may not inspire you to change your life. Write down what being in good health would help you do, like feel better, be more fit, or live long enough to see your grandkids grow up. If you need inspiration for living a healthier life, review your list.
2. Figure out how ready you are. Are you ready to make healthy changes now? If not, might you be ready in a few months? People at different stages of readiness need different motivations to take action. If you aren’t quite willing to change yet, think about what you would need to do to become more ready.
3. Break big goals into smaller ones. Losing 50 pounds is like climbing a mountain. If this is your goal, think instead about starting with a 10-lb. loss. Make mini goals that will help you reach it, like starting to walk around your block, then later jogging around it, then entering a 5K race in your community.

I’m Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV with the news doctors are reading: Health news that matters – to you.

Life Line Screening: Friday Roundup Blog Post – April 6th

April 6, 2012

Friday Roundup:

Mammograms + MRIs/Ultrasound = More Breast Cancer Detection

A new study released in the April 4th issue of the Journal of American Medical Association notes that the addition of an M.R.I. or ultrasound to annual mammography tests leads to a higher rate of incident breast cancer detection than with just the mammogram alone. “The addition of screening ultrasound or MRI to mammography in women at increased risk of breast cancer resulted in not only a higher cancer detection yield but also an increase in false-positive findings,” the authors also report.

New Study Claims Americans May Be Fatter Than They Believe

Seeing isn’t always believing, as the BMI (Body Mass Index) may lead us to believe. The BMI, used by physicians, fitness trainers, physical therapists and nutritionists across the country to determine body fat for individuals based on height and weight, is coming under criticism by a study that claims that body fat percentage should be considered when assessments are made. For example, according to the study 4 in 10 adults who are considered “overweight” in the BMI could actually be labeled as “obese” if the percentage of their body fat were included in the determination. Since obesity brings with it greater risks of diabetes, heart disease, heart attacks and joint troubles, knowing that someone is actually “obese” could make a huge difference in the lifestyle changes they decide to make or in the information they are provided by their medical care team. Food for thought indeed!

Common Diabetes Drug May Also Fight Certain Cancers

The common diabetes drug known as metformin, used to control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, may also turn out to be a helpful drug for battling both prostate and pancreatic cancers. According to new studies presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, metformin may halt the growth of cancer tumor cells in men with prostate cancer, as well as extend the lives of people suffering with pancreatic cancer. Good news for sure from the research field!

Larry King Jr. is Building His Own Legacy Promoting Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

February 23, 2012

When Tampa Bay Times columnist Ernest Hooper recently sat down with Larry King Jr. for an interview about his new endeavor and future plans, it may not surprising that his first question to King was: What’s it like being the son of a famous icon? King’s answer proves that, while proud, his is concentrating on his own legacy…

For any “Jr.,” it’s tough. You have to live up to the reputation that your father has achieved. […] I’m certainly proud of what he’s accomplished, but it’s a hard measuring stick. I have to thank my mom for her advice. She always said, “Be who you are and be the best at who you are.” You have to be comfortable in your own skin. He’s done what he’s done, now I’m trying to chart what I’m going to do.

With this confidence and positive attitude, King has invested $250,000 to $500,000 renovating Cheval Athletic Club in Lutz, Florida. The club opened to residents and non-residents beginning with a 3-day event on Friday, February 17, called “Cheval Gives,” held in conjunction with the nearby Cheval Golf and Country Club.

King has been a resident of Chevel for about 9 years, but it is his goal to make Cheval’s athletic club a place for children and families in and outside the Chevel community to visit and have access to features such as (a):

  • Tennis courts
  • Refurbished pool
  • Refurbished playground
  • New fitness room
  • Designated area for nutritionists to teach about proper diet
  • Designated area for students to receive health education

LifeLine Screening supports the Larry King Cardiac FoundationKing is also the president of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, an organization that Life Line Screening proudly sponsors and works with. The organization was started by his father, following his heart attack and quintuple bypass surgery, after he learned the cost of the surgery. Mr. King worried about people who would need the same care but do not have the insurance coverage or money to pay for it. As such, the Larry King Cardiac Foundation provides life-saving cardiac care to those people.

http://www.lifelinescreening.com/health-updates/healthy-you/heart-health/heart-disease-and-women-number-one-killer.aspx

To find out more about women and heart disease click on the picture above.

The number one cause of death in the U.S. is cardiovascular disease – even for women! The only difference between genders is the possible symptoms.

Of course, the most common symptom of a heart attack is pain in your chest lasting more than a few minutes. An article in the Examiner.com,* however, reports that a high percentage of women who suffered a heart attack did not have chest pain.

Instead, according to The National Institutes of Health (NIH), some women experienced new or different physical symptoms a month prior.  These physical symptoms, included one or more of the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Shortness of breath
  • Indigestion
  • Anxiety
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Pain or discomfort in the jaw, stomach, back, neck and/or arm

So, make sure maintain a healthy lifestyle, get regular screenings from a trusted health source, and – especially for women – pay attention to physical changes/symptoms.
