Peggy Fleming Shares Personal Story to Help in PAD Coalition Efforts

May 5, 2011

In a May 4, 2011 press release, the Vascular Disease Foundation (VDF) announced that U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Peggy Fleming will be featured in a DVD teaching tool promotion from the Vascular Disease Foundation’s PAD Coalition and their partners, the American College of Physicians. This educational tool kit will be made available after a $5 donation. This promotion highlights May Stroke Awareness Month.

In the DVD, “A Guide to PAD,” Peggy will share her own experiences with heart disease, having lost both her father and her sister to the illness. The DVD, with accompanying booklet, is aimed to educate patients on peripheral arterial disease (PAD), its risk factors, symptoms and treatments. It will also include beneficial lifestyle changes.

Life Line Screening Runs Health Fair for Dr. Oz Show

September 12, 2010

I was recently privileged to help run a Know Your 5 Health Fair for the Dr. Oz show at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. The people at the church were warm, welcoming and so happy to have us there. The Dr. Oz team was excited by the bustling atmosphere, the excitement from the screening participants, and the great backdrop the screening provided for the show. It was a pleasure and a joy to be there.

The screening was featured in the September 7th airing of the Dr. Oz Show, which was also the show premiere. You can see a snippet on the Dr. Oz website at http://www.doctoroz.com/know-your-5-videos/know-your-5-lifesaving-tests-pt-2. We screened 82 people that day, many of them waiting several hours to get their tests.

I talked to probably all 82, plus the church staff. Many had stories of high blood pressure in their families, or strokes and heart attacks. Some struggled with their weight or with finding a time and a location to exercise. Many shared stories of lost loved ones and confided that they didn’t want to die early because of diseases that could be caught and treated, if only they took control of their health.

Our Clinical Director had a separate section off to the side of the main screening areas where she counseled people with abnormal results. Our key finding was high blood pressure, which is the number one “ager” of the body and can lead to stroke and heart attack. Getting this number under control should be everyone’s highest priority and I’d like to recommend the home monitors by Omron. You can download a coupon on the Dr. Oz website and get $10 off. These compact blood pressure monitors are easy to use and can help you keep tabs on your pressure.

Of course, you make an appointment with us as well, and we hope everyone will take advantage of the Know Your 5 package by visiting us at http://www.lifelinescreening.com/know-your-5/ or calling 1-888-576-LIFE (888-576-5433).

I’d like to thank the folks at the church for their open arms and commitment to raising awareness of these important numbers, and to the Dr. Oz team for allowing us to be a part of this great adventure – getting America screened.
