Go-To Fruits for Fighting the Flu
To avoid the flu, many people rely on a flu shot, frequent hand-washing, overall cleanliness and other simple methods. But did you know certain fruits can help ward off the illness? ABC News released a list of the top fruits that fight the flu.
Topping the list at number one is apples. This fruit contains a large amount of healthy antioxidants that is equivalent to consuming 1,500 mg of vitamin C. They’re also filled with protective flavonoids, which have been seen to help prevent heart disease and cancer.

Healthy Diets and Healthy Hearts
Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. This makes prevention and healthy lifestyles incredibly important, and one new study shows that a heart-healthy diet may reduce the odds of having a heart attack or stroke among people with heart disease.
“Even if someone is taking medications, eating a lot of bad [foods] – like saturated or trans fats, fast and junk foods, red and processed meats, sweets [and] refined and processed foods – will still wreak havoc in the body,” said Samantha Heller, clinical nutrition coordinator at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut in a HealthDay news article. “We must consider our food as medicine and be as thoughtful and dedicated to healthy eating as we are to taking our prescribed medications.”

How to Keep Your Brain Sharp
Looking for ways to keep your brain active and healthy? One study suggests that taking part in more activities involving mental work like reading, writing, and playing cards or board games can help preserve the structural integrity of the brains of older people.
“Reading the newspaper, writing letters, visiting a library, attending a play or playing games such as chess or checkers, are all simple activities that can contribute to a healthier brain,” said Konstantinos Arfanakis, researcher from Rush University Medical Center and Illinois Institute of Technology in the Health.com article.
